Dog Statue MeditatingAre you aware of the benefits associated with meditation? The act of mindfulness meditation involves bringing one’s complete attention to the present moment–where it can influence many aspects of health and healing. A recent comprehensive review found that mindfulness meditation can directly impact the immune system and decrease inflammation in our body. Inflammation contributes to pain on many levels, which is why anti-inflammatory interventions are important in helping chronic pain patients manage their daily pain. Meditation, along with nutrition and physical exercise are some methods that have been shown to have these anti-inflammatory effects. The popular meditation app “ Headspace” is seeking FDA approval as a prescription meditation app. Headspace is in the processes of conducting numerous clinical trials to determine specific doses and meditation techniques that show the most health benefits for a variety of conditions. In theory, physicians would be able to prescribe evidence-based forms of meditation as treatment, similar to medications. The free app, “Headspace” currently has a pain management pack that focuses on reduction of pain experiences.
